Gender as a Field of Possibility by Caffyn Jesse

We are very pleased to feature another blog from Caffyn Jesse, founder of Ecstatic Belonging.

Caffyn says that "Transgender and gender-expansive people often come to know—through necessity—that gender is not fixed, but responsive. It is singular and multiple. Assigned, and continually unfolding. Shaped by hormones and chromosomes, in all their complexity—and also by sensation, relationship, imagination, culture, and time."

Much of the public story about gender-expansive lives is told through harm. And the harm is real. It shapes choices, safety, livelihood, and belonging in profound ways. Harm needs to be named, resisted, and changed.

But it is not the whole story.

When gender-expansive lives are seen only through the lens of disadvantage and victimization, something essential disappears. The creativity. The intelligence. The courage it takes to listen inward, and live from that listening. The ways we are reimagining what gender can be—through daily acts of attention, choice, and invention.

There is knowledge and power here.

Transgender and gender-expansive people often come to know—through necessity—that gender is not fixed, but responsive. It is singular and multiple. Assigned, and continually unfolding. Shaped by hormones and chromosomes, in all their complexity—and also by sensation, relationship, imagination, culture, and time.

Gender is not a static category, but a living process. Not a simple binary, but a patterned complexity. Not something settled once, but something we each participate in creating throughout our lives.

Some of us are pushed into conscious relationship with this, by inner imperatives that won’t let us stay within inherited forms.

But this way of knowing gender is available to anyone who is willing to notice.

To feel where gender norms fit, and where they don’t.

To sense how that shifts across contexts, relationships, moments, cultures.

To play. To experiment. To keep choosing what feels true.

To explore gender as a field of possibility.

If you move with courage in your gender, it makes more room for me to do the same. The more we develop trust in our own inner knowing, the more we can recognize and respect it in each other.

A wider belonging begins to take shape between us—

a net we are weaving, thread by thread,

each of us learning how to hold and be held

in a world that can bear more beauty.

May we aim to stop the harm,

and also to savour the sweetness,

to enjoy the pleasures,

to nurture the creativity,

and to join together in evolving what is possible.
